Learn English with the Foundation

Lincoln City Foundation are thrilled to be able to continue to offer English language support to non-native speakers across Lincoln thanks to funding received from the National Lottery Community Fund.

Conversation Clubs’ have been delivered by the Foundation in the Sincil Bank area of Lincoln for several years and have engaged with individuals from a variety of countries including Bulgaria, Mexico, China, Poland and Italy. The aim of classes is to teach English in accessible community settings and help individuals to progress onto further opportunities, such as employment, community volunteering, or simply feeling more able to chat to their neighbour as they pass them on the street.

The Lottery funding will see the Foundation’s provision in the Sincil Bank area sustained, as well as offering further opportunities for non-native speakers across the City working with members of English in the Community Partnership (Lincoln Study School, Alive Church, Bridge Church, Bishop Grosseteste University and Lincoln College). This will include coordinating educational trips and visits, offering work experience placements to TESOL students, and further development of an ESOL Library for teachers and learners.

Neville Coupland, Community Organiser and English Tutor said; ‘Common language is the bridge between all people and so to be involved with the development of the English in the Community Project has been a great privilege. Seeing participants grow in confidence and outlook over the duration of the courses is inspiring. If you would like to get involved as a supporter of this vital work, please feel free to contact the Foundation for either a casual conversation or further insight.’

Whilst face to face delivery remains paused, the Foundation are offering individuals a chance to learn English virtually. A free ten-week course will commence in March offering separate classes for three levels of learner; beginner, intermediate and advanced. Hour long lessons will be delivered via Zoom and thanks to National Lottery funding, there is no charge for any of the courses.
