Sincil Bank Community Recognised at Lincolnshire Environmental Awards

The collective efforts of several organisations and groups working in partnership to enhance the Sincil Bank community in Lincoln has been recognised by the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust at the Environment Awards 2021.

Lincoln City Foundation and Sincil Community Land Trust have been jointly shortlisted in the final three for efforts made to improve the environment for Sincil Bank residents.

Sincil Community Land Trust, primarily formed of residents, led the nomination and have been recognised for their work regenerating an unused green space into St Andrews Garden - a place where people can socialise and enjoy an array of nature and wildlife. The former children’s playground had been locked away for fifteen years and left to become an unsightly, overgrown patch of land. Sincil Community Land Trust have worked to clear the site, thin trees, install pathing and seating, and develop a planting scheme including a lawn, woodland, and wildflower meadow area. The site is now used daily by local people, as well as by small community groups using the space for organised activities. Larger events have also taken place including the English Football League Day of Action when three flowering cherries were planted.

Lincoln City Foundation have contributed to the nomination through their support to Sincil Community Land Trust, in addition to the development of Sincil Community Garden which is another green space revitalised for local people to enjoy. The strip of land which runs alongside the Sincil Bank River had been neglected for many years, however through community garden sessions facilitated by the Foundation, now resembles a flourishing garden. Local people have donated plants and tools to be used on site, and the repair of wooden planting structures has enabled wildflower to be planted. These flowers have attracted an array of bees, butterflies and other creatures, as well as providing a colourful display of nature for those walking alongside the river.

Alice Carter, Community Manager at Lincoln City Foundation said “Through our work listening to residents in the Sincil Bank area, a common concern which is raised is the lack of green community space. Addressing this need and taking on such important projects for the community has made a visible impact to the appearance of the Sincil Bank area, as well as supporting residents’ health and wellbeing. To be shortlisted from applicants across Lincolnshire is a huge accolade for the community and groups involved.”

Representatives from the Foundation and Sincil Community Land Trust will be presenting to a judging panel on Saturday 25th September at Whisby Nature Park, with the winner announced later that day.

Good luck to all involved!
