Year 13, BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport student Sophie, is celebrating 10 years since she had a life-saving operation at Great Ormond Street Hospital. 10 years later to the day, she signed her commitment to Allen Community College… In America!
America’s Community College is much like England’s University so Sophie will head out to study Psychology in the USA, on completion of her BTEC Level 3 Sports course with the Lincoln City Foundation.
Sophie is understandably thrilled with her news,
“My dream since I can remember was to play football in America, (mainly inspired by bend it like Beckham), so when the opportunity came around to trial for scholarships, I was eager to go. This gives me a chance to test myself against some of the best athletes in the world.
I've had to overcome meningitis, injuries and negative self-talk to get me where I am today, but it’s all been worth the hard work because ‘hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard’. With thanks to my amazing tutors and my academy coach”
This fantastic achievement comes 10 years to the day after Sophie had a life-saving operation to win her battle with Meningitis at The Great Ormand Street Hospital in London.
Education Manager Hanna Storey, couldn’t be prouder of Sophie's achievement,
“Sophie is such a fantastic student, very punctual, polite and always willing to ask questions. She is the model sports student… she has great practical ability and can match this with her theoretical knowledge. She always strives for perfection in everything she does. Allen Community College in Kansas will be gaining a very bright star”
Sophie is in her second year of BTEC study, having joined the course in 2018. Since studying at the Lincoln City Foundation, she has thrived, developing her performance and confidence both in the classroom and on the pitch, however, the current social distancing protocol could have put all that in jeopardy.
The recent lockdown restrictions were a concern to our BTEC students as they were understandably worried about how they would complete their qualification, so close to the end of their 2 years. Luckily the Education team were ahead of the curve and were already researching ways to keep students learning, with as little disruption as possible through such an ever-changing time. As a result, when the call came to close schools, our team was ready to hit the ground running, and in true community spirit, we all pulled together, staff, parents and students, to make online learning happen. This new virtual learning environment has meant students could continue the course and pass to the best of their ability.
