Amazing Volunteers: Dawn Goodings

Dawn is a regular volunteer with Curly’s Athletes (Lincoln City Foundation's Half Marathon event partner) supporting their running events, as well as volunteering at her local parkrun.

Through volunteering with Curly’s, Dawn completes numerous roles such as marshalling courses, helping with event set up and pack down, and supporting runners through registration.

At parkrun Dawn is one of the Event Directors in charge of overseeing the weekly 5k runs, and also supports with roles such as barcode scanning, pacing, and sending out those all-important result emails! Dawn has currently volunteered on 69 different occasions.

Dawn describes; “I love the buzz that I get from helping others - it’s such a great feeling and I feel like I am giving something back to the community. The best part for me is the end of an event, where everyone is happy, and the atmosphere is electric! I am on a high for the rest of the day- I absolutely love it!”

So, what makes Dawn volunteer so regularly? “It’s getting to meet new people and joining in with their excitement. You get to see so many happy people and it’s such a great feeling being able to share that with them. I genuinely love the experience that it gives me as well. I work as a catering manager in my day to day role, so being outside and getting to do something a bit different is great.”

A standout moment for Dawn has been volunteering as a pacer at the Doncaster 10k last year, and she describes it as memory which will stay with her forever. “Running people in to the Doncaster Keepmoat Stadium at the end, I was completely overcome with emotion. It was an amazing feeling to see people so happy and people thanking me for helping them to get the times that they wanted! I will never forget that feeling and the camaraderie I shared with my fellow runners. I can’t wait to do it all again!”

In addition to being an integral volunteer within the running community, Dawn has also been helping her local community as a responder for the NHS during the Cornavirus outbreak. This means she has been collecting prescriptions for people that are having to self-isolate or are unable to leave the house.

Thank you Dawn – you are simply a star!
